February 28, 2005: I Like The Lyrics, And It's Got A Beat You Can Dance To . . .

Things just keep getting better and better here at e23. We've now added product ratings to our list of features. You can rate – on a scale of 1 to 5 – anything you've ever bought from us (if you're a registered buyer, that is . . .). And those ratings are there for other buyers to see, to compare, and use in their shopping.

Just another improvement from the folks at e23. Many thanks, as usual, to Jackie Hamilton for the programming wizardry that made it happen!

February 26, 2005: It Rhymes With "Mammoth" . . .

And it sort of means the same thing . . . and it's another new company that's coming on board to e23 in the near future. Who is it? It's Behemoth3, publishers of the Masters & Minions line of fantasy PDFs that take some of your favorite "old school" D&D monsters and breathe enough life into them to light up a city block. One of their recent releases got this glowing review in Pyramid Magazine (sorry, subscription required to read it, but trust me – it was glowing). Be on the lookout – those files will be available soon!

February 25, 2005: Baby's First Update . . .

It's another first here at e23, along with that first step, that first haircut, that first tooth. We've posted our first updated files! The folks at Alter Ego sent us updated versions of their Metacreator family of roleplaying character creation software, and we posted the new versions in place of the old ones.

Those of you who bought any of the old versions from us – and are registered with us – should have gotten an email last night telling you about the updated version, complete with a link to a free download of the upgrade. If for some reason it didn't work like that for you, send us email and we'll get right on it. And if you didn't register, well, we've got no way to track you down and get you your free update now, do we? I mean, we're good, but we're not that good.

February 24, 2005: Terror Comes With A Whisper

The Whispering Vault was one of the most truly groundbreaking, imaginative, original roleplaying games ever. It's a shame it never found the commercial success it deserved. Perhaps in this new PDF economy it will find its niche, though, and we're thrilled to help Ronin Arts bring The Whispering Vault to a new audience.

Brand new here at e23 are three Whispering Vault supplements for your bone-chilling roleplaying pleasure:

  • Mastering the Vault. Written by the late Nigel Findley, a member of the Adventure Gaming Hall of Fame, Mastering the Vault is a short guide for game masters, complete with an adventure illustrating Findley's principles.
  • Mortal Magic. A 144-page sourcebook for magic in The Whispering Vault.
  • The Book of Shadows. A short PDF detailing 15 new Shadows to use in future adventures.
Also new today from Ronin Arts is Treasures of Freeport, a d20 sourcebook of over 100 magical and mundane treasure designed for use with the Green Ronin's award-winning Freeport setting.

All new today, all at e23!

February 23, 2005: The Secrets Of Game Design Revealed

A lost classic of the adventure gaming industry, Game Design Vol. 1: Theory and Practice has been out of print for years. Written by Steve Jackson and Nick Schuessler from a series of articles they originally published for Space Gamer magazine, this is a must-read for would-be game designers.

And now it's here on e23! Game Design Vol. 1: Theory and Practice is now for sale, no lines, no waiting. Check it out!

February 22, 2005: Always Working To Serve You Better . . .

Didja see the neat new features? Didja? Huh? Didja?

Our Potentate of Programming, Cabalist of Code, Wizard of Something That Begins With "W," Jackie "Kira" Hamilton, has done it again. Have you checked out the What's New? page? It now lists the most recently posted ten products (and ties), and has easy-to-click-to archives of every release available on e23, from the most recent on back, by date of availability. So no matter how long it's been since your last visit, you can catch up on what you've missed.

Or you could just pop on that What's Hot! link and see what our best sellers are, and check out a great download you might have overlooked! We've got two lists, our top sellers for the last 30 days and our all-time, Hall of Fame list. This early on, of course, they're pretty close to the same. But that will change as time goes on . . .

We've got more upgrades coming, so keep on the lookout. And tell your friends about us -- there's never a parking problem at this mall!

February 14, 2005: New Today: GURPS China!

Uploaded today and available for sale is GURPS China, a long out of print historical sourcebook from Steve Jackson Games covering, as you may have guessed from the title, China. (Thank you, Captain Obvious . . .)

This is a bit of an experiment for us here at e23. When we first started thinking about going into the online sales business, we weren't sure we wanted to sell our old out-of-print titles at all. Barring doing a lot of expensive and time-consuming reconstruction work, we were looking at just straight page scans, which are a) memory hogs (the GURPS China PDF is 60MB); b) only so-so looking; and c) not searchable. Yet, lots of other companies post straight scans of their old out-of-print books – mostly dating from before the era of desktop electronic publishing – and sell them without complaint.

This is where you, the faithful e23 customer, weigh in. We have an e23 board on our public web forum, and you are invited to post there about how you feel about scanned in out of print titles. Or you can email us direct and tell us what you think that way. Should we bring you more books the same way we've done GURPS China, and do it now? Should we make them better looking, easier to download, searchable – and possibly more expensive – and take our time to do it right? Or should we not bother doing them at all? We look forward to hearing from you.

February 13, 2005: Weekend Answers, Part Deux

It's the weekend, and instead of our usual bragging announcement, I answer a question destined for our FAQ:

Q: Hey, I helped playtest one of these suckers . . . where’s my comp copy?

A: Good question. We owe “comps” to a ton of people right now, because we were hoping to use the gifting feature of the programming to do it (at least that’s the current excuse . . .), and it isn't operational yet. If it doesn’t get up and running soon, we’ll just have to do it “by hand,” that is, send everybody emails with PDF attachments. How low-tech . . .

Got a question for the Weekend Q&A? Send it to e23@sjgames.com and be sure to put "Weekend Q&A" in the subject header.

February 12, 2005: On The Weekend, We Answer Questions

It's the weekend, and we're not in the office. No brand new uploads to plug, no new company signings to announce. So let's answer a question from the soon-to-be-frequently-asked-questions pile:

Q: What’s this about product ratings?

A: We don’t have the programming up and running yet, but people who have bought a product will have the opportunity to rate it on a scale of 1-5. Those ratings will be there to for everyone to see, and we’ll also have pages where you can see the top-rated items by publisher, author, genre, game type, whatever.

February 11, 2005: Over 200 . . . And Counting!

Without even blinking, the file inventory blistered past the 200 mark when we added another 22 products yesterday. How do we do it? Mostly, it's Phil Reed at Ronin Arts, who is trying to get his entire back catalog up on e23 as quickly as he can. And since he has one impressive back catalog, I think we're going to continue to grow by leaps and bounds . . .

In the latest batch of Phil's stuff, I'd like to point out two products in particular: DragonMech: Rumors & Lies is the first Ronin Arts PDF produced for Goodman Games' DragonMech RPG. (And we just signed a deal with Goodman, so we'll have the original game here soon, too!). Also, Future: Campaign Planner is a brand-new product just released yesterday by Ronin Arts. The new fully bookmarked PDF includes everything the original version had and adds pages for starships, aliens, mutations, mecha, planets, star systems, cybernetics, and more.

February 10, 2005: New Companies Coming!

We've just signed contracts with three more companies to sell PDFs on e23. Once they finish the paperwork on their end and start sending us files, we'll have them for you to buy!

Goodman Games is one of the biggest PDF publishers in the industry, specializing in "old school" d20 products that are consistently recognized by the d20 fans with ENnie nominations and honorable mentions.

Blacksburg Tactical Research Center (BTRC) has been in the game business for a long, long time. He'll be bringing you games in his EABA and CORPS line (Greg Porter does love his acronyms), and other roleplaying goodies.

Arc Dream Publishing is a small company started by Dennis Detwiller and Greg Stolze to publish supplements for their Godlike RPG, originally published by Pagan Publishing. Godlike was a brilliant, visionary, incredible roleplaying game about emerging superheroes in World War II. Sadly, it didn't find a market. But the game lives on with Arc Dream's products, and we'll be thrilled to be bringing them to you here at e23!

Stay tuned – we'll let you know as soon as the files arrive and are up for sale.

February 9, 2005: Take A Walk On The Bluffside

New to e23 today is Bluffside: City on the Edge, an excellent fantasy city sourcebook from Mystic Eye Games, distributed by Ronin Arts. Bluffside is 180 pages of PDF goodness, chock full of locations, NPCs, adventure ideas, intrigue, adventure, treasure, traps, allies, betrayal, opportunities, and danger! Pick up on it, right here at e23!

February 7, 2005: New News, New Product, New Publisher – It's All New!

e23 is just 2-1/2 weeks old, and the word that keeps coming up over and over around here is "new." Every day, we got something . . . new. Take today.

Today, we got . . . a new product: 30-Ton Ship's Boat Deckplan 1.01 is the first of what we hope are many releases by one of the original Traveller gurus, Academy of Adventure Gaming Hall of Fame member Loren Wiseman. Loren is a new (there's that word again!) publisher, and he joins the ever-growing roster of companies selling their online wares through e23. Watch for more in coming weeks.

We also have . . . new features! Just below these words of semi-wisdom from me (down below my sig), you'll notice a new box marked "email." That will lead you to a subscription page that will get this nearly daily e23 update (no, this one. The one you're reading right now) sent directly to your mailbox completely hassle-free. Convenient, no?

But that's not all! See that bar over there on the left marked "What's Hot"? It was put there in anticipation of our ratings system, which isn't quite up and running. So in its place, it's linked to something a lot of you have been asking for – a list of our newest releases, in order of freshness. We'll change the bar to "What's New" soon – if it hasn't happened already by the time you read this . . .

There you go: More new stuff from the never-ending land of new. More new tomorrow, I'm sure. We just can't seem to help it . . .

February 4, 2005: Released Today . . . Online Today!

Phil Reed at Ronin Arts sent us a brand new PDF he had just finished earlier today: Future: Arcana has two new prestige classes and over a dozen new spells for players who want to add magic to their modern or science-fiction d20 campaigns. And now, thanks to the modern miracle of the internet and e23, what was born just a few short hours ago is now available for you to own right now! That's right, with just a couple of mouse clicks, you can pick up a copy of Future: Arcana for your very own. Don't delay: get it before it becomes -- literally -- yesterday's news.

February 3, 2005: Star Ace Flies Again!

You would have to be an old fogie in the game business (like me) to remember when some of TSR's best designers got fed up with their bosses, broke away and formed an upstart company called Pacesetter Games, and published their own roleplaying games. One of them was Star Ace, classic space opera borrowing heavily from a certain movie trilogy that was very big in the 1980s (think evil space empire and plucky rebel alliance).

And now, thanks to Ronin Arts, Star Ace is back! The Star Ace Classic Box Set and the Star Ace Classic Screen are now available on e23, freshly posted today, from Ronin Arts. Check them out, and take to the skies again!

February 1, 2005: More Ronin Arts Goodness

Two new products from Ronin Arts have been posted today:

Changing the Rules is a guide to modifying some of the less "realistic" and unpopular d20 rules in ways that many players have found make their campaigns more enjoyable. And the Mecha SRD Extreme has all the feats, abilities, and other rules you need to build any kind of mecha you can think of in the d20 system.
