April 30, 2005: Good News And Bad News . . .

The Good News is that the free GURPS Magic Spell Charts were so popular yesterday that they brought our servers and our T1 connection to their knees yesterday, causing slowdowns, at least one reboot, and much wailing and gnashing of teeth on the part of our IT staff.

The Bad News, of course, is that the traffic brought our servers and our T1 connection to their knees yesterday, causing slowdowns, at least one reboot, and much . . . you know the rest. We apologize for any delays in service, but now our IT guys know just how hairy it can get when something people really want goes online. Next time, they'll be ready. Or at least they'll get a lot less sympathy.

April 29, 2005: GURPS Magic Spell Charts – Brand New And Totally Free!

GURPS Magic Spell Charts are a visual representation of the relationships between the hundreds of spells listed in the new GURPS Magic, totally updated for GURPS Fourth Edition. These charts not only reduce the work required to determine the prerequisites for a spell, but also reveal the underlying organization of the colleges. For each college, they show how far can one progress at each level of Magery; which spells are central, prerequisites for most of the other spells in the college; and how much overlap there is with other colleges. The simple, open format allows for further customization. Color the boxes to show which spells a mage knows and instantly see which ones he is eligible to learn.

And are you ready for the best part? It's FREE! Consider it a test drive of the e23 system with a nifty game aid as a payoff, courtesy of Steve Jackson Games. Have fun!

More Goodman Goodness

April 27, 2005: Casey & Andy – Brand New For GURPS Fourth Edition!

Just Released – GURPS Casey & Andy, new for GURPS Fourth Edition and now for sale on e23!

GURPS Casey & Andy is based on Andy Weir's hilarious webcomic Casey & Andy, found on the Web at www.galactanet.com/comic/index.htm. The title characters are 21st-century mad scientists dabbling in time and dimension travel, instantaneous cloning, and increasingly complex apocalyptic doomsday devices. Apart from that, they live in suburbia with their girlfriends, Mary and Satan. Yes, that Satan.

GURPS Casey & Andy is also a complete GURPS Fourth Edition sourcebook available only as a PDF right here on e23! Casey & Andy is written by David Morgan-Mar, who knows a thing or two about webcomics with his own Irregular Webcomic, and certainly knows about writing for e23. It also features tons of Casey & Andy art by webcomic creator Andy Weir, including an original four-page story just for this PDF!

We're big webcomic fans at e23, and very happy with how GURPS Casey & Andy turned out. I have a feeling it may not be the last one we do, either.

April 19, 2005: New And Improved

Well, not new, not really. But definitely improved.

We just posted revised versions of GURPS Atlantis and GURPS Mysteries. These two products have only been out for a few days, but there were some things you told us in no uncertain terms you didn't like about them . . . so we fixed them.

For one, we changed the layout on Mysteries so the page numbers alternate left-right-left-right, instead of all the numbers on the right side. Not that big a deal, unless you plan to print it out double-sided and bind the pages into a book. We've changed our Fourth Edition template so all future GURPS e23 books will work that way.

And we added bookmarks to both Mysteries and Atlantis. It's something we should have been doing to all our really big PDFs all along, anyway. As time and resources permit, we'll go back and revise some of our other products we already have for sale -- and future large SJ Games products from e23 will always be bookmarked.

If you are a registered buyer of either of these products, you have already been sent an email with a URL to download your revised version. If you think you should have gotten an email like that and haven't, contact us at e23@sjgames.com and we'll straighten it out.

Thanks for the feedback. We're glad you guys care enough about what we do to let us know when we fall short of your expectations, because that's the only way we can get a chance to fix it.

April 17, 2005: What A Week!

Wow . . . you guys showed us. In a single week, you made GURPS Mysteries the best-selling product in e23 history!.

Now admittedly, "e23 history" is all of 87 days at this point, but we can only use the perspective we have, and say – again – wow.

And there's a lesson to be learned here, of course. We always knew original material would sell better than reprints of out of print material, but we didn't know the difference would be this extreme. The next question will be, can the sales momentum keep going? Because we're going to need more than a four-day sales spike to rev our engines. We've got some more original stuff coming soon; we'll see what happens.

April 16, 2005: Rising From The Depths . . .

Like the fabled lost continent it covers, it's GURPS Atlantis, the historical fantasy sourcebook that is probably more fantasy than history. Probably. Out of print for some time now, this e23 edition was put together from the most recent electronic files, and includes corrections of all known errata.

Originally published in 2001, GURPS Atlantis has three different campaign backgrounds – high fantasy, conspriatorial weirdness, and one that fits equally well for steampunks or superheroes. Written by Phil Masters, GURPS Atlantis beckons roleplayers of all genres and systems to its inviting – and treacherous – depths.

April 14, 2005: Fantasy Adventures Live Again

Brand new today at e23 are two adventures from the long-out-of-print GURPS Fantasy Adventures, first printed in 1991. Lost Inheritance puts the adventurers on a path into a dark dimension where strange monsters are the least of their worries when jealousy and treachery are afoot. And Sahudese Fire Drill puts the party in charge of keeping a hundred Sahudese happy and healthy while their boss concludes trade negotiations and they are painting the town several shades of red. April 9, 2005: Mystery Solved

We are thrilled to announce that our first full-length original GURPS book, GURPS Mysteries, is posted and for sale now here on e23.

Mysteries is the result of much perseverance and hard work on the part of author Lisa Steele, who also wrote GURPS Cops. We almost published this book last fall, but then we realized that by the time e23 was actually up and running, GURPS Fourth Edition would be out – so Lisa went back and updated the entire manuscript, and now Mysteries is also our first GURPS Fourth Edition supplement on e23!

We also have a blast from the past available today, Fighters of the Purple Rage, a scanned-in adventure from the pages of GURPS Fantasy Adventures, first printed in 1991. Please take a moment to give it a look, too.

April 8, 2005: Not Good News, Better News

Our programming wizard has been at it again, improving our e23 News Archives. Now you can read our news of days gone by a month at a time, which can be helpful if you know about what time something happened, and don't want to wade through a long archive to find it. And now you can specify the order you read the archive, too -- forward for you literal types, or backward for you skip-to-the-ending-and-see-how-it-turns-out types. More ways to enjoy your online shopping experience, from e23!

April 3, 2005: In The Mood For An Apocalypse?

We've got a couple of cool games for you here on e23 if you are:

Dark Millennium from BTRC takes all the pain, squalor, and early death of 11th-century Europe and adds a Biblical apocalypse to it, as the War between Good and Evil keeps Heaven occupied. On the plus side, God rewards the faithful with miracles and great power. On the down side, the dead have risen and hunger for human flesh. Can you stem the tide of evil on Earth until Heaven triumphs? And what if they don't?

And MotoCaust from Ronin Arts is a post-apocalypse wasteland filled with zombies, fast cars, and massive guns, perfect for gamers looking for a little flesh eating and automotive destruction. MotoCaust was created by Phil Reed and Christopher Shy, and is one of Ronin Arts' best sellers.

So there's two fresh takes on the end of the world, just a quick download away – check 'em out!

April 2, 2005: April Fool's Day: The Day After

Looking back, it appears the biggest reason I failed to rope in more of you with yesterday's April Fool's joke was that I said that the Artificial Intelligence Game Master would be available for the Macintosh.

Oh, well. You can't blame a guy for trying . . .

April 1, 2005: e23 Announces AIGM Software

We knew when we first came up with the idea of e23 that we wanted to be more than just another PDF store. Much more.

We said from the very beginning that we wanted to be in the business of selling more than just static words online, that anything that could be transmitted over the net was fair game. Music. Video. Art. Executable files. And, of course, the Seekrit Project we couldn't tell you about until now – the AIGM.

AIGM stands for Artificial Intelligence Game Master, and it is exactly what the name says it is: a computer-based artificial intelligence that will game master a live roleplaying session for you and your friends. It was designed for use with GURPS Fourth Edition . . . well, to be honest, GURPS Fourth Edition was designed to work with it – many of the design choices made in the Fourth Edition revision process were made because they made the AIGM project go more smoothly.

The initial version of AIGM will be available from e23 early next week, as soon as the special sub-group of the Men in Black have finished the beta test. We have had to scrap the voice-recognition module, as that technology is not quite ready, so all input will be by mouse and keyboard. On the bright side, the Game Master's "voice," recorded by Wil Wheaton, did make it in just under the deadline.

Of course, what makes the AIGM special is the "I" – the intelligence. Our programmers took the accumulated wisdom of such experts as Robin Laws, author of Robin's Laws of Good Game Mastering, Ken Hite, author of Suppressed Transmission, Doc Cross, author of several TOON supplements and the greatest TOON convention GM ever, Aaron Allston, one of the legendary Champions superhero and pulp writers and GMs, and many others, and developed an amazingly entertaining game master that will adapt to your style of play – and he (or she) never forgets a rule! (Unless you want her to . . .)

The basic package for AIGM will cost $99.95. Additional modules – different voice packages, different rules sets, a Macintosh version – will be available later at an additional cost.
