February 28, 2006: Magic Is Everywhere

GURPS Magic was the second supplement we published for the Fourth Edition of GURPS, and it's the second Fourth Edition PDF we now have for sale here on e23. Looks darn good, if I can stop sneezing long enough to say so myself (time for my annual end-of-winter cold . . . nothing to worry about).

There will be two more Fourth Ed. books in March, if we can keep up the pace – Infinite Worlds and Banestorm. Plus there's some more cool original material tantalizingly close to completion, and a slight traffic jam of product from our other vendors that might daunt a lesser man.

Let's just say it's going to be a fun March. Stick around.

It's brand new, and it's available only on e23! GURPS Lands Out of Time is an all-new, original game world for GURPS Fourth Edition, complete and ready to play. Whether you're playing modern explorers in a dinosaur-infested lost world, or native Neanderthals trying to get by with stone tools and whatever good spirits the tribal shaman can conjure up, GURPS Lands Out of Time has everything you need. So lose yourself . . . in adventure!

February 19, 2006: More New Goodies

The latest from our many partners:

TPK's second-ever product takes d20 somewhere it's never been before with a thorough treatment of Julius Caesar – not the ruler, the play. One of the great pieces of literature meets roleplaying, and it works. Check it out.

1 on 1 Adventures: The Star of Olindor is the latest solo adventure from Expeditious Retreat Press. Designed for a single 6th-8th level Rogue, the adventure can be scaled up or down, or even adapted to a group.

And The Kyngdoms continues its d20 rules ledgermain with Class Design: The Longstaff Wizards.

February 18, 2006: Speaking Of New And Improved . . .

While you're drooling over those new, improved GURPS Magic Spell Charts (uh, you have picked up your free copy of the new, improved Spell Charts, haven't you?), I should note that by sheer coincidence, a number of companies have just this week sent us updated versions of their own products, and we have happily posted them for your downloading pleasure:

Expeditious Retreat Press has a new version of 1 on 1 Adventures: Gambler's Quest.

Goodman Games has an upgraded version of Dungeon Crawl Classics #5: Aerie of the Crow God. The new expanded edition is 50% larger than the first printing, with new cover art and a new sequel adventure.

And Ronin Arts upgraded their Superline Gamemaster's Series: A Fistful of Plot Devices, #1, revising it to 2nd Edition Mutants & Masterminds.

And if you're a registered owner of the old version of any of these products, you get the new improved edition for free. For nothing. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada. We sent out notification emails last night; if you think you should have gotten one and didn't, drop us a line and we'll look into it.

February 17, 2006: Shall We Try That Again?

OK, I could explain it to you, but it's kind of technical. Or I could just ask you to trust me that while it was our mistake, it wasn't a really stupid mistake, so please don't blame us too much. But I guess it's up to you.

But if you ran out as soon as the announcement hit and downloaded the new, improved GURPS Magic Spell Charts like we asked, you didn't actually, uh, get the new, improved file. You got the old file. We're really, really sorry. But as of 9:30 am or so Thursday, Feb. 16, we figured out what went wrong, and if you go hit the download now, you will get the new, improved version.

Really. I promise.

February 16, 2006: GURPS Magic Spell Charts – Now New And Improved!

Even though Michelle Barrett, one-time Mistress of Mail Order and Ruler of Retail over at Warehouse 23, is no longer with us, she still keeps an eye out for one of her last projects for us, the GURPS Magic Spell Charts. This handy set of charts lists all the Fourth Edition spells by college, showing their relationships, prerequisites, common roots, etc. It's very handy, and we've been giving it away (like, for free) here on e23.

To make a good thing better, Michelle just sent us a new version of the Spell Charts. It fixes all the known errata to date, of course, but on top of that, she did it in a vector graphics program that cuts the PDF file size to less than 10% of the size of the old file!

And, of course, it's still free. Pick it up with a simple click (or two . . .). And enjoy!

February 15, 2006: Building A World? Here's Your Library

New from Expeditious Retreat Press, it's five volumes of their World Building Library line, taking the historical detail of Tibetan and Indian myths and religion and converting it to your d20 campaign. Check out these newest volumes with a simple click on the "What's New?" bar on any e23 page.

February 12, 2006: But That's Not All . . .

While you're checking out GURPS Fantasy, don't forget some other new products that were also posted on Friday, including the latest Dungeon Crawl Classic from Goodman Games and another great issue of Superline for all you Mutants and Masterminds fans from Ronin Arts.

February 11, 2006: GURPS Fourth Edition Books Coming To e23

Starting this month, Steve Jackson Games will be releasing PDF versions of its Fourth Edition print catalog on e23. The PDFs will be bookmarked and searchable, and will be priced at $24.95.

We will be releasing the previously released books in chronological order, starting with GURPS Fantasyavailable now at e23 – and continuing with a new PDF every two weeks through the end of March with the release of GURPS Powers. Thereafter, a new GURPS Fourth Edition PDF will be released approximately three months after the print version ships to retailers. GURPS Fourth Edition Basic Set will remain a "print-only" product.

Why release the PDFs now? Steve Jackson Games was built on good relations with our retail partners. We were concerned, as were many retailers, that PDF sales would reduce the number of print sales. However, after observing the market, we have concluded that, in general, the sales of a PDF version of a product do not affect the sales of the print version. Therefore, we can satisfy the growing number of PDF-using customers without harming the retailers who have supported us for so long.

The release of the Fourth Edition PDFs will not affect the schedule of the print books, nor will it change our print runs. Gamers who love the smell of a new book will be able to find print copies just as easily as before, and those who prefer the advantages of digital can now be satisfied.

February 10, 2006: Call For Playtest: Locations: Wizard's Tower

"Locations: Wizard's Tower" is a mostly generic (with some GURPS Fourth Edition stats) fantasy supplement, a detailed description of the premises, contents, and inhabitants of a wizard's tower, ready for integration into most medieval fantasy games. Written by Matt Riggsby, it will appear soon as a PDF at e23.

The "Locations: Wizard's Tower" playtest will be a closed mailing list playtest. Participation in the playtest does not guarantee credit in the published book, and is limited to people with valid Pyramid subscriptions. (You can purchase a Pyramid subscription directly from e23.) A sizable but still limited number of playtesters will be chosen to participate based on a variety of criteria to represent the diverse GURPS player base; previous playtest experience is less important than an interest in the subject. Playtesters may be added in two or more groups to give everyone a chance to apply; the playtest is expected to run until the end of February.

Some simple rules and posting guidelines, based on the usual playtest rules here:

www.sjgames.com/pyramid/playtest.html
www.sjgames.com/pyramid/login/playtest/playtest-rules.html

will be in effect during the playtest to help the authors and staff keep track of everyone's contributions, and will be provided as part of the playtest materials.

Interested parties willing to follow instructions should apply by sending an e-mail to the Lead Playtester, Jeff Wilson, at jwilson@io.com . The subject should say "LWT Playtest" and the first line should have the applicant's real name followed by their preferred playtest e-mail address in brackets like so:

Jeff Wilson <jwilson@io.com>

Applicants may use as many additional lines as necessary to relate their relevant background and other qualifications for playtesting "Locations: Wizard's Tower." People with little or no particular background or experience in playtesting are equally sought and encouraged to apply, with spots reserved for first-timers.

February 5, 2006: Mistakes . . . We've Made a Few

But then again, too few to mention . . .

Today's topic is errata. And if you can't class it up with a reference to Frank Sinatra, the Chairman of the Board, then there's no hope for any of us. Anyways, adventure game products contain errata. They are very complex pieces of work, done on short deadlines and tight budgets. Mistakes happen. At e23, we have three ways to fix them.

Errata sheet. With our older books, when all we have is a scan to work with, we add an errata sheet to the back of the PDF listing all the errata for the product that we know about. Since these books tend to be 15 years old or more, there's a good chance that the errata sheet is complete and will not change, but we are of course prepared to update it if the need arises.

File update. With a newer book, when we have the electronic files that were sent to the printer, we can fix the errata directly in those files before converting them to a PDF. The result is a PDF that is cleaner and more mistake-free than the print version. And if more errata is discovered, we can go back and update the file again. And again, if need be.

Product replacement. This is something that our outside companies do. When they have errata to fix, or a product to improve or update, they send us new versions and ask us to replace the old ones. We're happy to do it, of course. We love it when companies are not only looking forward to their next product, but making sure their backstock is as good as they can make it to keep their customers coming back.

So how do you know one of your e23 products has been errata'ed or updated or replaced? You'll find out automatically – if you're a registered member of e23. Every time we update or upgrade a product, we send out an email to all registered buyers letting them know – and those registered buyers can come back any time and download that improved version for free.

We call that doing it "Our Way."

February 4, 2006: Welcome To Battlefield Press

The newest addition to the e23 lineup is Battlefield Press, publishers of The Open Core System set of roleplaying rules. Authors Chris Helton and Jonathan Thompson call Open Core the "house rules you've been waiting for." Take it for a spin and see what it can do.

February 3, 2006: Coming Soon from e23

The schedule has gotten a little bit jumbled around here, what with all the GURPS Third Edition reprints we put up last week, and all the great stuff from other companies pouring in, and the Sekrit Projekts we're working on and all. But I thought I could at least take a moment and let you know what else we've got coming your way in the next week or two (or, on the outside, three . . .):

In Nomine: Litheroy

Searph Archangel of Revelation
The World is Waiting to be Revealed, in All Its Glory.

Litheroy is the ultimate enemy of secrets, and he and his servants are nearly as dedicated to wiping out ignorance; to a Litherite, what you don't know will always hurt you. Superiors: Litheroy, by S. John Ross and Eric Burns, gives the Archangel of Revelation the same deluxe treatment Lilith and Eli have gotten in previous volumes of this popular In Nomine series. And there are more coming!

GURPS Lands Out of Time

Humans and dinosaurs go together like gamers and pizza. That tens of millions of years separated the last of the dinosaurs from the first of the humans is a mere inconvenience, easily ignored. GURPS Lands Out of Time is a sourcebook for human/dino adventuring, providing all you need to know to place man and giant reptile side-by-side, whether it's a "Lost World" adventure, caveman slapstick, or something in between. GURPS Lands Out of Time is an e23 original game setting for GURPS Fourth Edition.

GURPS Basic Set, Third Edition, Revised

This is the PDF reprint of the last printing of the Third Edition of the GURPS Basic Set.

TOON Munchkin

Two wacky games that go wacky together! Toon guru Doc Cross has taken the classic monsters, classes, races, equipment, and treasure from Munchkin and written Toon stats for them. There's even a dungeon! And sample characters! And tables! Lots and lots of tables with lots and lots of wacky TOON-ishly crazed things on them! And even more exclamation points!!!

. . .

OK. I'll calm down now.

Anyway, that's all coming in the next couple of weeks, as soon as we can pump it out among all the other things we're doing – which you'll also like, we promise.

February 2, 2006: Milestones Met With Magnificent, Uh . . .

Modules? We've got more than that. Merchandise? Too generic. Oh, well. We've got a smorgasboard of cool products from different companies that kick us up over the 700 mark. The good stuff just keeps on coming!

Take a look at Coyote Trail, Politically Incorrect's take on the Western using their genreDiversion system; or Goodman Games' good-looking Battle Tiles 1: Enchanted Palace. Sword's' Edge Publishing has more d20 Modern military mayhem with Canada's Combined Security Reconnaisance Section, or you could get your fantasy fix with the final adventure in "The Last Mage of Mount Fane" trilogy with The Tower of Fane from The Kyngdoms.

We've also got six more new products from Mario Barbati of 01 Games, including four from his Explore line, which combine PDF graphics and QuickTime programming to give you a dungeon room you can walk through from a first-person perspective. This guy never stops impressing me.

All ten new products can be seen in one convenient place, with a quick click on the "What's New?" button on nearly every e23 page – so get thee a-clickin'!

February 1, 2006: GURPS Vehicle Design Playtest

GURPS Vehicle Design is a GURPS Fourth Edition supplement written by David Pulver, containing detailed rules and systems for modeling real and fictional vehicles and scheduled to appear soon as a PDF at e23. (Weapons design will be largely reserved for a companion work.)

The GURPS Vehicle Design playtest will be a closed mailing list playtest.

Some simple rules and posting guidelines, based on the usual playtest rules here:

will be in effect during the playtest to help the authors and staff keep track of everyone's contributions, and will be provided as part of the playtest materials.

Interested parties willing to follow instructions should apply by sending an e-mail to the Lead Playtester, Jeff Wilson, at jwilson@io.com . The subject should say "VDG Playtest" and the first line should have the applicant's real name followed by their e-mail address in brackets like so:

Applicants may use as many additional lines as necessary to relate their relevant background and other qualifications for playtesting GURPS Vehicle Design.
