October 27, 2006: E23 Remains Independent

We were almost as surprised as the rest of you by the OneBookShelf ad page (it's been taken down now, but was e23.rpgnow.com). We hadn't seen it. We had been asked if we would listen to a buyout offer. This is a business; we have a very good relationship with PSI, which is part of the same family of companies, so we said "sure, we'll listen."

We have not seen an actual offer. Given the news that OneBookShelf will be reducing the amount it pays to publishers, and given the unhappiness we have seen from some of those publishers today, we suspect it makes better business sense to stay independent.

This is not pique at the leak. These things happen, and we wish the new combined OneBookShelf, which is certainly many times our size, lots of luck. This is just "Now that we have more information, we think we will be more successful, and serve both the players and the other publishers better, by remaining independent."

Since we are not hiking our commission prices up from our usual 20%, Ronin Arts and other publishers will not be increasing the prices on products sold via e23.

Q) Has e23 been purchased by or merged with OneBookShelf?
A) Nope. And we have advised them that we don't want to entertain an offer at this time.

Q) So what was up with e23.rpgnow.com?
A) We assume they created it as part of a pitch to add e23 to their merger list. None of us ever saw that page.

Q) So, no commission rate hikes, right?
A) We're happy with where they are now, so we'll be sticking with 20% for the foreseeable future.

October 13, 2006: Library Science Kills

Some of you will notice (if only because I'm posting this), that the stock numbers for most of the SJ Games products on e23 have changed. There are a few reasons for this, but the big one is that we didn't really have strong guidelines on what stock number to assign to what product . . . and that was coming back to bite us as we tried to assign logical numbers to new products.

So we looked over what guidelines we had (when they were followed - like I said, they weren't strong guidelines), codified a set of rules everyone could agree on, and thrashed our way through almost 200 products.

In the short-term, this is messy, and I apologize for that. But long-term, it's better to do now, when we have around 200 products, than to do a few years from now, when we have even more.

Thank you for understanding, and if you come across a broken link on our site, please let us know so we can fix it.
